Mount Sinai Hospital New York

FYI...

If you have sarcoidosis and Live within the proximity GO HERE!

Mt Sinai Medical center is a teaching hospital that has a staff of pulmonary specialists with extensive sarcoidosis experience. Among them are Dr. Maria Padilla and Dr. Alvin Teirstein.
I am treated by the latter. The hospital has been considered for a long time now a research center for sarcoidosis in fact the Kveim-Siltzbach test was developed here by Dr. Louis siltzbach with research done by Dr. Morten Ansgar Kveim, a Norwegian dermatologist and It is the only test that, if positive, is considered to be true diagnostic of sarcoidosis.

One thing I hear a lot of sarkos complain about is that their doctor is clueless and they get sent from one doc to the other resulting in wasted time and you still feel like crap. If you do not live in NY or close to here. Then here is a list of Sarcoidosis doctors and centers around the world

I'm happy you had such a good experience here. I did not find it to be a very organized place and thought it was like a factory. The doctor I saw for three years there had no idea that he had ever seen me before, looked at two x-rays side by side taken at the same time and actually told me nothing had changed. I had to tell him that the x-ray were the same. Ugh. So frustrating. I think it must all depend on who is your doctor and not the institution itself.

You absolutely right the doctor has a lot to do with it. I'm not crazy about the new phone systems and it is a really busy hospital. Over I don't wait that long though. What makes the institution so great is that they have a clinic and a support group which I plan on going to soon. The other thing I found great was that I had my blood taken ct scans pet scans even surgery all done in the same place. And since it's a learning hospital they usually have or try all the new medicine even if it's not fda approved. Do yo remember which doctor you went to?
I guess I feel so strongly about this place because I go here often and my doc and I have a pretty good relationship. I have been in there so much that even the receptionist and billing people know me.
I went to a few doctors in Jersey and they just didn't have the experience to deal with my case they kept sending me from specialist to specialist pretty much wasting my time. Isn't it funny though how 2 people can have quite opposite experiences in the same place. Thanks for posting a comment I really Appreciate it.

The doctor I saw there was Dr. Iionuzzi. He moved to another hospital somewhere upstate. I've heard nice things about Dr. Maria Padilla but wasn't able to see her because I don't believe she takes new patients.
I personally love Dr. Prager at Columbia. He's smart, knows his patients and has been around long enough to know when you should or shouldn't worry.

I know when I was first diagnosed and had young children the Intern at a small hospital told me that I would be in a wheel chair the rest of my life. Well at least he knew what Sarcoidosis when he saw it. I went to Upstate Hospital in Syracuse,NY. Thank God they new how to treat me. 25 years later I am still doing fine. I have had a bad kidney infection. I have a slight case and have been treated symptomatically. I always feel that my personal Drs do not understand the disease completely. I try to educated myself as much as I can. I am a Nurse taking care of other people. I hope you are all doing well. I hope you have a happy holiday with your family.

I think that Drs. Teirstein and Padilla are absolutely the best and highly recommend them. Mt. Sinai has a sarcoidosis support group that meets regularly, a sarcoidosis clinic, and a private practice with Drs. Teirstein and Padilla plus others. Mt. Sinai has treated nearly 20,000 sarcoid patients and know the most about it.

Drs. Teirstein and Padilla are the best. Mt. Sinai has an active sarcoidosis support group, a clinic, and the private practices of the doctors. Their doctors have treated nearly 20,000 sarcoid patients.
I tried going elsewhere, but Mt. Sinai is the best for sarcoidosis. People go to them from all over the world.

Padilla may have great knowledge, but she is a horrible doctor. My sister saw Dr. Padilla for two years. During that period, there were a myriad of screw ups. At one point, the xrays and tests from a visit were lost. The admins frequently don't pick up the phone - the practice seems out of control.

Padilla was very condescending and short when my sister pressed her regarding what seemed to be a worsening condition.

In short, several months later, my sister was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer - which had clearly started at least six months before according to her physician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

To recap, the pulmonary specialist at Mount Sinai misdiagnosed lung cancer as sarcoidosis, hence the lung cancer was not discovered until it had metastasized throughout her body - liver, adrenal glans, bones, etc.

My sister is now fighting for her life.
